Why Spring is The Perfect Time to Visit Plettenberg Bay

Spring is a pretty special time in Plettenberg Bay. The flowers are blooming, the weather is warmer, and the streets are bustling with locals and travellers. With plenty happening around town and nature showing off, spring is a wonderful time to pack your bags and visit Plettenberg Bay.

Besides pristine beaches and its rugged good looks, here are a few more reasons to visit Plett during spring:

Plett Arts Festival

Each year, Plettenberg Bay comes alive with the sounds of jazz and the beauty of connection through art. The Plett Arts Festival is a staple amongst art lovers and visitors looking to celebrate creativity, culture and community. Set against the beautiful backdrop of Plett, the Plett Arts Festival is a 10-day extravaganza packed with music, fine art, jazz, collaborative installations, workshops and talks, cultural performances and exhibitions. The festival kicks off with the famous Twilight Meander on Plett’s Main Street, and offers a wonderful way to mingle with the locals and enjoy a vibrant atmosphere. While soaking up the beauty of Plettenberg Bay is more than a good reason to visit, this should be your second!

It’s a deeply restorative experience that gives you the chance to explore the wonder of Plett’s natural surroundings. From canopy to coast, the festival features guided bird walks, river cruises, pelagic trips, and hands-on conservation.

Otter African Trail Run

If you’re searching for something that’s going to push your limits, the annual Otter African Trail Run is one way to do it. This iconic trail run brings runners to the spectacular coastline between Nature’s Valley and Storms River, covering 42 km of rugged trails, river crossings, and steep climbs. While this is an exhilarating experience with breathtaking scenery, it is not for the faint of heart. If you’d rather enjoy the excitement from the sidelines, spectators can cheer participants on at the start and finish line, soaking up the atmosphere without taking on the challenging trail themselves. Either way, it’s a great event to support.

Whale Watching in Plett

There’s more to do in Plett than enjoying Plettenberg Bay’s art scene and an adrenaline-fuelled run. During the months of June to February, Plettenberg Bay offers exceptional whale watching opportunities. The Southern Right Back whales make their way from the Antarctic to mate, calve and hang around before making their way back home around November. But don’t fret! There are still plenty of whale watching opportunities, as the Humpback whale lingers a little longer – usually until February. Bryde’s whales and playful pods of dolphins can be spotted throughout the year too. Get up close and personal with an ocean safari or hang back by watching from cliff based view points along Robberg and Keurboom. Don’t forget to bring your camera!

When: June – February
