5 Water Activities to Enjoy in Plettenberg Bay

Plettenberg Bay is renowned for its golden sands and rolling waves. It’s a coastal paradise that offers the best of both worlds — adventure and relaxation — all coming together to create an unforgettable travel experience. If sun and sand are what you’re after, then Plett has some exciting water activities that will only be the cherry on top to your travel adventures.

Here are five water activities to enjoy in Plettenberg Bay:

Kayaking on the Keurbooms River

There’s nothing more magical than drifting along an ancient river, listening to the sweet, melodic chirps of abundant birdlife, and soaking in the beauty of the indigenous trees that call this part of Plettenberg Bay home. This activity is a great way to explore the natural beauty of the area and add a dash of adventure to your day. If you’re looking to explore at your own pace, you can hire a kayak at the entrance of Keurbooms River Nature Reserve. Alternatively, you can choose a guided tour lasting 2, 3, or 4 hours, depending on your preference. Don’t forget to bring your sunscreen, hat, and sunglasses along with water or a cooldrink to help quench your thirst.

Tip: Try and go during the mornings and early afternoons as it is usually calmer and more enjoyable for paddling.

Surfing at Robberg Beach

With 35km of pristine Indian Ocean shoreline and several Blue Flag beaches, it’s no surprise that Plettenberg Bay is considered one of the top surf destinations along the Garden Route. What makes this slice of paradise even more mesmerising is the abundance of marine life that call these waters home — you’re bound to spot a seal or five when riding the waves. Robberg Beach is a favourite amongst surfers thanks to consistent waves and long sandy beach breaks. This spot is great for beginners and intermediate surfers, with surf lessons and board rentals located in the area. If you’re looking to switch things up, Lookout Beach and Central Beach are a few other favourites.

Stand-Up Paddleboarding

Once you’ve had your fill of sun, surf, and sand, it might be time to switch up your water activity plans. Plettenberg is home to some of the most gorgeous beaches along the Garden Route, but it also boasts pristine waterways and lagoon access — perfect for stand-up paddleboarding. Create unforgettable memories as you paddle past indigenous greenery, spot local bird and marine life, and enjoy a unique aquatic experience. There are several SUP operators across Plett, offering tips, paddling techniques, and guiding you through local waterways. This is a fun activity for beginners and experienced paddlers, and is great for the entire family.

Snorkelling and Swimming at Lookout Beach

Slip on your mask, take a deep breath, and dive into a world of colourful fish and playful sea creatures. Snorkelling is a must-do water activity in Plett as it offers some of the best conditions thanks to its mix of sheltered bays, rocky reefs, and clear coastal waters.

Central Beach should be at the top of your list, especially Redbait Reef. This local snorkelling spot is named for the abundance of Redbait that thrive here, which is good news for snorkelers, as these little fish attract plenty of other marine life. It’s a colourful reef with an array of blues, purples, and oranges, but pretty colours aren’t the only thing you’ll be mesmerised by. Keep your eyes peeled for the colourful fish, playful dolphins, curious seals, and elusive shysharks that call these waters home.

Swim with the Seals

Seals are often affectionately referred to as the “puppies of the sea” due to their playful nature. And really,  who wouldn’t want to get up close and personal with these “puppies?” According to Plett Seal Adventures, there are over 6000 Cape Fur Seals living along the Robberg Coastline, giving you an exciting opportunity to experience the magic of swimming with seals. This seal adventure is done with experienced guides and is a fun and family-friendly activity to enjoy for the day. Watch them dive, sunbathe or splash about from the comfort of the boat, or jump in and swim alongside them.

Tip:  Remember, these playful seals call this area home.  Watch, admire, and give them space to move around comfortably.
