Beautiful beaches, a rugged landscape and seemingly endless lush forests are just some of the reasons that make Plettenberg Bay the perfect destination. While this seaside gem is well-known for its beauty, it also offers plenty of outdoor adventure.
If outdoor adventure equals lacing up your hiking boots and breathing in the fresh ocean air, then you’ll love exploring Plett. From scenic coastal walks to rugged forest trails, Plettenberg Bay offers something for every hiker.
Ready to explore the natural beauty and charm of this coastal gem? Here are a few hiking trails worth exploring:
Coast, Wildlife & Views: Robberg Hiking Trail Witsand or Point Circuits
Robberg Nature Reserve offers hiking trails that are arguably some of the most iconic trails in and around Plettenberg Bay. You’ll have the opportunity to pick from three different hiking trails located in the Reserve, but all of them offer stunning views of the Indian Ocean and rocky coastline. The Gap Circuit, a 2.1-kilometre trail, gives hikers and casual strollers a perfect taste of what this spectacular nature reserve has to offer without breaking a sweat.
This is an easy trail and is a short loop, heading straight into a mudstone cleft before offering a little peek into history. Not only is this area famous for its natural beauty, but it also offers a fascinating glimpse into history, with evidence of Gondwanaland’s prehistoric break-up 120 million years ago on display.
Why You’ll Love It: A family-friendly trail that seamlessly blends nature and history, ensuring a trail that’s more sightseeing than sweat.
An Easy Coastal Walk: Garden of Eden Forest Walk
Listen to the melodic whistles of Plettenberg’s indigenous birds as you meander along wooden boards and over bridges. The Garden of Eden Forest Walk is only one kilometre, but it’s packed with birdlife, beauty, and calm, providing the perfect escape into nature. It’s a relatively easy and short walk, making it excellent for a quick stroll with the family or those looking to enjoy some easy birdwatching. The walk is entirely wheelchair friendly, making it great for anyone wanting to enjoy the lush forests of Plett.
Why You’ll Love It: Great for families, older travellers or anyone wanting a calm nature walk.
Forest, Peace & Birdlife: Kranshoek Coastal Trail
If you’re up for a bit of a challenge, the nine-kilometre Kranshoek Coastal Trail offers scenery that makes every uphill worth it. The trail begins at the Kranshoek picnic site at the top of a tall waterfall – thankfully, this isn’t where the beauty ends. The trail winds through the forest and down into a gorge in which the waterfall’s stream flows, giving you another glimpse into the beauty of this area. You’ll follow the stream towards the coast, before going up the slopes (the uphill will be worth it, remember), before plateauing and heading back to the picnic site.
Be prepared! Some portions of this trail will have you clamouring over rocks, so make sure you have the right shoes on and are up for the challenge. Unfortunately, the route isn’t well-signed, so downloading the map ahead of your hike can be useful. Despite the challenge, it’s a gorgeous hike that offers spectacular scenery.
Why You’ll Love It: The perfect blend of rugged coastal cliffs, peaceful forests and sweeping ocean views. Great for hikers who enjoy a little adventure.
Challenging, Full Day Hike Robberg Witsand
If you’re looking for a trail that challenges your fitness level, then Point Circuit at Robberg Nature Reserve is perfect. Don’t be fooled by the fact that this trail is a nine-kilometre loop, the Point includes some serious climbs, sandy sections and rocky scrambles. Unbelievable coastal scenery, close-up marine life sightings and some of the best lookout points in the Garden Route are what’s on offer if you push through. There’s even the chance to cool off in tidal pools and on small, sandy beaches along the way.
The trail loops around the entire peninsula, taking you on a full-day adventure that offers dramatic seaside cliffs, seabird colonies and hidden beaches and tidal pools.
Why You’ll Love It: This is a great trail if you’ve got plenty of time and are looking to explore what makes Plettenberg Bay such a gem. Some fitness is required, or at the very least, be prepared to work up a sweat.
